Katharine, please know that you did not fail anyone. It was not that Chris loved alcohol more then you and the kids, he had a nasty disease, a disease that only he could cure himself of. You have the kids to think of now and if ever you are down just look into their eyes and know that they love you very much and are depending on you to be strong. I have a similar story, my husband was an alcholic. After 3 days of drinking, and arguing, I gave him the choice either me and our daughter or the booze, something had to go. One night July 31, 1998 I desided it was better that I did not go home because I knew he had been drinking. I talked to him several times during the course of the evening and told him everything will be alright and as soon as he sobered up we would talk. Well the next day he was pronounced dead, he took his bottle of beer into the garage and started the truck. I guess you can figure out the rest. I have had to deal with the guilt and pain for the past 3 1/2 years. It doesn't get any easier. Just keep strong for the kids, my daughter is now 5, and as far as she knows he was a good man, a good father and a good husband, thats all that matters.
