Do any of us get what we deserve? How many words have we said unthinking of their syntax or verbiage? We seldom go out of our way to injure another. We also seldom think of how our words affect. It is our meanings that get lost through our inability to speak what our hearts feel.
Sometimes it is better to say nothing... you have examples of such times. Think of the exchanges as a song of which the words you were not sure you heard right or whose meaning puzzles you. There are many examples of lyrics that make no sense or whose orators mumble through the syllables. The tune, the melody, helps us hear the song... the message. The hugs given were the melody... the words, ill-spoken, thoughtless. What did the song say to you?
Let us hope none of us get what we deserve. I ponder over the inequity of life's taking the breath from one's so loved... of children cancer patients... of victims of abuse. What was their crime, their faux pas, their mis-step that warranted their fate? Faith teaches that justice will be metered out in the end... not the middle or the beginning.
Most, including myself, just ramble uncontrollably... thankfully oblivious of the arrows sent "out there". "DUCK!" , all that hear my voice or read my words.
